How To Prepare For Your Cake Smash Photo Session
Almost all parents that contact me for a cake smash session tell me that they have no clue about how to plan or go about the session. In which case I tell them “No problem, that’s my job!” . I’ll tell you all about how to prepare for your cake smash session.
First thing I do for my parents is send them a detailed Welcome Guide that goes through the entire process. Included in the guide are pages on what to expect, when the best time is to schedule, what to wear and a FAQ page.
TOP tips to plan for your session are:
Cake Smash Sessions Go Quickly
Most people are surprised to know that I do my cake smash sessions in about 30 minutes. I shoot fast! I have to! These little people have short attention spans. All because it doesn’t take a lot of time does not mean that I don’t capture many photos- because I do 😉
Scheduling Time Matters
Let’s face it. When our littles are babies and toddlers, their schedule pretty much dictates our lives. lol There is a reason why the late afternoon/early evening hours are called the “bewitching time”. By the time of day everyone is pretty much “DONE!”. I always encourage parents to schedule these sessions before the afternoon. Babies just do better in the mornings. And of course, we have to plan around nap and snack times… even adults are cranky when they are hungry and tired. Ok, maybe thats just me haha
What To Wear To The Cake Smash Session
This can very greatly from baby to baby. It all just depends on the look that you are going for. I have a wardrobe to choose from for all my clients, but a lot of times they already have outfit ideas. I always like to start in an outfit not meant to get messy, then we move into something that is intended to be washed later from all the colored sugary goodness. This can be another outfit or sometimes just a diaper.
Have Fun
I always tell parents that babies can smell fear. They just can! They are amazing in that way. If you are stressed out, they will most certainly pick up on it. Therefore, I try to encourage parents to come excited and be ready for whatever their little cutie does for the camera.
Ok, well those are the big ones. If you are thinking of scheduling a session go ahead and send me a message and I’ll pass along my Welcome Guide to you!
